The Directoire period (1795–1799), which followed the French Revolution, ushered in a new style of restraint and clarity that bridged the opulence of Louis XVI with the grandeur of Empire design. Furniture from this short but influential era is characterised by elegant, neoclassical lines, often accented with delicate painted or inlaid decoration, and motifs drawn from antiquity such as laurel wreaths, urns, and Greek key patterns. Lighter in spirit than its predecessors, Directoire design reflects the republican ideals of simplicity and order, while still retaining a sense of refinement and sophistication that makes it highly prized by collectors today.
