Neo Classical Late 18th Century Parcel-gilt Pier Mirror

A splendid example of Swedish Neo Classical style, this late 18th-century parcel-gilt pier mirror seamlessly blends refined ornamentation with classical motifs. Exemplifying traditional Swedish craftsmanship, the piece captures the elegance and symmetry characteristic of circa 1800, making it an ideal addition to a sophisticated interior.

Origin: Sweden
Date: Circa 1800
Material: Parcel-gilt giltwood and original mercury glass

Dimensions: Height: 126 cm (49.5 ins), Width: 79 cm (31 ins)

Condition: Retains an appealing original patina and foxed mercury mirror plate; minor age-appropriate wear.

This antique mirror is reminiscent of the best Neo Classical work displayed in notable collections and celebrated museums throughout Europe. The rectangular frame is enriched with raised and gilded strapwork, echoing the pared-back luxury for which Swedish decorative arts of this period are renowned. The pierced balustrade apex, featuring interlocking rings and a Roman Emperor’s cameo, references both Greco-Roman inspirations and the decorative language prevalent during Gustavian rule in Sweden.

Notable Features:

  • Superb Craftsmanship: Elegantly carved and parcel-gilt, with crisply detailed strapwork and a distinctive pierced balustrade.
  • Sophisticated Design: The medallion depicting a Roman Emperor beneath a classically draped bow and husk swags showcases the influence of Ancient Rome and Neoclassical motifs.
  • Collecting Value: Mirrors of this scale and with such distinguished details are increasingly sought after by collectors of antique Swedish mirrors, enhancing any traditional or period setting with authentic charm.
  • Practical Value: Exceptionally versatile, this Neo Classical mirror serves equally well as a statement display piece in an entrance hall, above a fireplace, or as the focal point of a curated antiques collection.

Perfect for the discerning interior designer or private collector, this Swedish pier mirror exemplifies 18th-century artistry and enduring Neo Classical appeal. Its rare original mercury plate and imposing dimensions guarantee presence and provenance, while subtle gilt highlights provide a touch of grandeur suitable for both display and practical use.
