Rare Early 19th Century Regency Octagonal Convex Mirror

An exceptional example of Regency artistry, this rare early 19th-century octagonal convex mirror dates to around 1815, encapsulating the grandeur and exuberance of English decorative arts. The mirror commemorates the celebrated Battle of the Nile, embracing the stylistic hallmarks of the Regency period with a flourish of neoclassical and exotic motifs.

Origin: England
Date: Circa 1815
Material: Giltwood with ebonised details, convex glass

Dimensions: Height: 122 cm (48 in), Width: 85 cm (33.5 in), Depth: 10 cm (4 in)

Condition: Excellent patina, minor historic surface restorations

The distinct octagonal form of this Regency convex mirror echoes the period’s fascination with geometric symmetry, while its ornate detailing draws comparisons to masterpieces found in major collections, such as those at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The combination of carved ebonised eagle, lyre, crocodiles, and intertwined serpents situates this mirror firmly within the romantic narrative and iconography of early nineteenth-century England. Its unique commemorative function and imposing scale make it an outstanding example of animal-themed English antique mirrors.

Notable Features:

  • Outstanding craftsmanship, evident in the intricate carving of the ebonised eagle perched atop the frame, seamlessly integrated within a stately double-headed lyre
  • Embellished with downward-facing crocodiles, meticulously carved from period illustrations, adding a rare and exotic touch aligned with the romantic sensibilities of the time
  • The base is adorned with intertwined serpents, providing a symbolic reference to wisdom and eternity, firmly anchoring the piece in Regency symbolism
  • Design significance lies in the harmonious blend of classical forms—octagonal shape, reeded ebonised slip, sanded gilt ground—with bold animal iconography, making this a superb statement for collectors
  • The convex mirror plate, surrounded by finely executed giltwood and ebonised details, creates a striking visual impact, ideal for both decorative display and historical interiors

This Regency convex mirror is prized for its rarity, distinguished provenance, and the arresting interplay of traditional gilding with sophisticated animal motifs. Collectors and connoisseurs alike will appreciate its remarkable scale and form, offering a focal point for antique mirror collections or as a standalone decorative highlight in refined interiors.
