These vases, characterised by their part-glazed cobalt blue and white appearance, remain notably unfinished. Each vase is adorned with elaborate tops featuring mythical Temple Lions, offering a glimpse into the rich symbolism of Japanese art. Intriguingly, the underglazed areas of these vases were intended to be later decorated in either Japan or Europe with lacquer or enamel, a practice highlighting the collaborative nature of art during this period. This decoration would have resulted in a ground of flowers within polychrome reserves, as per the clobber artists’ choice.
