A group of four Indian carved wooden lamp bases of closely related form, each finely hand-carved with bands of scrolling foliage, stylised flowerheads, and geometric ornament. The tall baluster shafts rise from circular carved bases and retain a wonderfully soft, weathered surface patina that enhances the depth and texture of the carving.
Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, the lamps reflect the rich decorative vocabulary of Indian architectural and furniture carving of the period, adapted here into elegant and highly sculptural lighting forms. Their restrained monochrome appearance allows the intricate relief work to take prominence, giving the pieces a strong architectural presence well suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
India, circa 1900.
