A Pair of Late 17th Century Tin-Glazed Campana Urns

A remarkable pair of early tin-glazed earthenware Campana urns, embodying the exuberant decorative character of the Renaissance Revival tradition. Of elegant twin-handled form, each vase is richly modelled with classical ornament, combining architectural structure with the lively surface effects characteristic of Mediterranean maiolica and faience production.

The bodies are centred by moulded figural roundels depicting classical profile busts, framed within broad curving reserves and flanked by scrolling handles. Deep gadrooned moulding to the lower body and flaring rims lends the urns a strong sculptural rhythm and reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance metalwork and stone garden ornament.

Particularly striking is the richly variegated tin glaze in tones of emerald green, ochre yellow, and cream, applied in a fluid splashed macchia manner that creates a vibrant and organic surface texture. The expressive glaze and robust modelling give the pair exceptional decorative presence while preserving the charm and individuality associated with early hand-crafted ceramics.

Rare survivals, the urns possess both architectural grandeur and painterly warmth, making them highly effective as interior decorative objects or garden room ornaments.
