An elegant late 18th-century Italian giltwood mirror retaining its original hand-blown mercury plate, the glass displaying the softly undulating surface, subtle rippling, and small imperfections characteristic of period manufacture. These natural distortions lend the mirror a remarkable warmth and atmospheric depth impossible to replicate in later glass.
The restrained rectangular frame is finely carved and water-gilded, with delicate repeating ornament to the inner moulding and a beautifully mellow surface patina acquired over more than two centuries. The combination of the softly foxed plate and rich aged gilding gives the mirror an exceptional decorative presence while preserving its authentic late 18th century character.
Original mirrors of this scale and condition are increasingly rare, particularly examples retaining such beautifully irregular early glass.
