A 14th-century Siamese red sandstone Buddha head with remnants of original lacquer and gilding, originating from Ayutthaya.
Thailand, circa 1300 - 1600

This bust is a 14th-century Siamese red sandstone Buddha head with remnants of original lacquer and gilding, originating from Ayutthaya, the historical capital of Thailand established in the same century. It is believed to be part of a larger set of Buddha statues, which were approximately 1.5 times larger than life size and were located in Ayutthaya.

These statues underwent significant damage in the 17th century when they were decapitated, an event linked to the 1767 Burmese invasion of Thailand.
