A substantial Japanese hexagonal lantern, crafted in bronze and brass and richly decorated with pierced panels, engraved ornament and a lotus-petal canopy. The architectural body is enclosed by finely worked openwork screens, while a decorative hinged door with elaborate escutcheon provides access to the interior. The broad, flared roof is formed as overlapping lotus petals, surmounted by a ring handle finial, reflecting the strong influence of Buddhist temple design.
