China, late 18th to early 19th century
A substantial Chinese stoneware storage jar of generously swollen baluster form, now professionally mounted as a table lamp. The vessel displays a characterful, irregular hand-thrown profile, lending it a sculptural quality and reflecting its original utilitarian purpose. Covered in a weathered olive-brown glaze with areas of natural surface variation, the body exhibits rich tonal depth and a beautifully aged patina acquired over centuries of use.
The broad shoulders taper gently to a narrow foot, while the short collar neck retains its original rustic appearance. Evidence of kiln firing, glaze pooling and minor firing imperfections contribute to the jar's authentic vernacular character. The lamp has been sensitively converted, preserving the integrity of the original vessel while creating a striking decorative object suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
An impressive example of Chinese provincial pottery, combining the understated beauty of antique stoneware with practical modern functionality.
