An elegant George III mahogany display cabinet, dating to circa 1770, of refined proportions and raised on slender square-section legs. The glazed upper section is enclosed by a pair of astragal-glazed doors with geometric tracery bars, opening to reveal adjustable shelves for the display of porcelain, glass or objets d'art.
The cabinet is surmounted by a finely executed broken-scroll pediment centred by a latticework cresting, while the frieze below is enriched with delicate blind fretwork, echoing the influence of Chinese taste that was highly fashionable in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Further blind fret ornament decorates the lower frieze, complemented by elegant corner spandrels beneath.
Constructed in richly figured mahogany with a warm, deep patina acquired over centuries, this cabinet is a fine example of the restrained sophistication and craftsmanship associated with the best English furniture of the George III period.
