A distinctive Chinese stoneware vase of baluster form, later converted to a table lamp. The body is covered in a rich emerald-green glaze with an attractive network of fine craquelure, and decorated with incised and hand-painted floral motifs framed within shaped panels. The dark manganese-coloured decoration contrasts beautifully against the vibrant green ground, creating a bold yet restrained decorative effect.

Originally conceived as a utilitarian vessel, possibly a food or storage jar, the vase displays the tactile qualities associated with provincial Chinese ceramics of the Qing period. Variations in the glaze, firing marks and areas of wear contribute to its character and authenticity, while the softened contours and hand-finished decoration reflect the individuality of traditional workshop production.
Later mounted as a table lamp with a brass fitting, the vase has been successfully adapted for contemporary interiors while retaining its decorative appeal and historic character. Shown with a modern linen shade.
Condition:
Later converted to electricity. Glaze crazing throughout with minor fritting, glaze losses and wear around the rim and foot consistent with age and use. A decorative and well-presented example.
Provenance:
Private collection, United Kingdom.
