A substantial Chinese stoneware vase of compressed baluster form, later mounted as a table lamp. The body is covered in a luminous turquoise-green glaze with an attractive crackled surface and decorated with hand-painted black motifs depicting stylised birds amongst scrolling foliage, enclosed within shaped cartouche panels. The painterly decoration and vibrant glaze combine to create a striking folk-art aesthetic characteristic of provincial ceramic production.
Possibly Qing Dynasty, 19th century

Dimensions (vase):
Height: 30 cm
Diameter: 26 cm
Base diameter: 16 cm

The shade shown as example
Country specific wiring completed once purchased.

Condition:
Later converted to electricity. Craquelure throughout the glaze, with areas of surface wear, firing imperfections, glaze losses and fritting around the rim and foot consistent with age. Minor losses and abrasions commensurate with use. Presents attractively.

Provenance:
Private collection, United Kingdom.
