A large and highly decorative Japanese Imari porcelain charger of scalloped circular form, richly painted in the traditional Imari palette of iron red, cobalt blue, and gilt. The central reserve is decorated with an abundant arrangement of flowering chrysanthemums and stylised foliage, enclosed within a broad border of alternating landscape and diaper panels richly heightened with gilded ornament.
The border displays elegant pavilion scenes, flowering trees, and stylised textile-inspired cartouches, all executed with the dense surface decoration and vibrant colour contrasts characteristic of late Edo and Meiji period Imari ware. The deeply scalloped edge further enhances the charger’s strong decorative presence and reflects the elaborate aesthetic favoured in export porcelain of the 19th century.
Bold in scale and colour, the charger possesses exceptional wall presence and functions equally well as a display piece or centrepiece.
Japan, late 19th century.
Diameter: 62 cm.
