A rare and important dining suite by the Hungarian-born cabinet maker and designer László Hoenig, comprising a substantial hardwood dining table and a set of ten dining chairs retaining their original turquoise leather upholstery. The ensemble exemplifies Hoenig’s refined modernist aesthetic combined with exceptional interwar craftsmanship.
The dining table is constructed in finely figured hardwood, its restrained architectural form emphasising proportion and material quality. Clean lines, subtly tapered supports, and carefully balanced massing reflect Hoenig’s approach to bespoke furniture design for sophisticated London interiors of the 1930s.
The accompanying chairs, upholstered in their original turquoise leather, provide a striking contrast to the warm timber. Their elegant silhouettes, tailored upholstery, and refined joinery demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with Hoenig’s Mayfair workshop. Sets of this scale were typically commissioned for substantial residences, and the survival of a cohesive suite is particularly rare.
After relocating from Hungary to London in the mid-1930s, Hoenig established a workshop and showroom in Mayfair and quickly attracted prestigious clients, including the Bank of England, Winston Churchill, and industrialist Lionel Jacobsen with his wife Ruth Jacobsen. The Jacobsen commission of 1936 alone reportedly comprised around fifty pieces of Hoenig furniture, illustrating both the scale of his work and the esteem in which it was held.
This dining suite embodies the meeting of Central European modernism and London’s bespoke cabinet-making tradition — elegant, architectural, and highly collectible.
