A charming pair of late Louis XV period fauteuils, the kidney shaped backs of simple outline supported on neo-classical fluted tapering legs. Each armchair stamped on the rails N.S.Courtois (Nicolas Simon Courtois master 1766 – Paris), France, circa 1760
The term ‘transitional’ defines the period between the rococo and neo-classical during the later years of Louis XV’s reign. These fauteuils have rococo backs and arms but rather than a curved cabriole leg, the Transitional leg is used with neo-classical fluting. As the style progressed under the reign of Louis XVI, chairs became increasingly restrained.
