A striking Italian ebonised and giltwood “Salvator Rosa” picture frame, of bold architectural form with a deep cassetta profile. The broad blackened moulding encloses richly carved giltwood slips comprising a twisted rope inner border and finely worked running foliate ornament to the sight edge.

The frame possesses the dramatic restraint associated with the finest Italian Baroque examples — the contrast between the dark ebonised ground and burnished gilding lending exceptional depth and presence. The surface has acquired a beautifully timeworn patina, with extensive historic worming and age to the timber contributing to its sculptural character and authenticity.

Frames of this type take their name from the 17th century Neapolitan painter Salvator Rosa, whose romantic and atmospheric landscapes were traditionally housed in similarly forceful architectural surrounds. Highly sought after by Grand Tour collectors and later English country house decorators, the “Salvator Rosa” frame became synonymous with dramatic presentation and Baroque grandeur.

Italy, circa 1700–1750.

A superb frame for Old Master paintings, works on paper or mirrors alike.
