Morocco, 19th / early 20th century
A decorative pair of Tamegroute pottery vases from southern Morocco, later mounted as table lamps. Characterised by their distinctive turquoise-green glaze, the vessels display the organic irregularities and artisanal charm for which the pottery of Tamegroute is celebrated.
Each vase is of elongated baluster form, raised on a spreading foot and fitted with a pair of applied loop handles beneath the cylindrical neck. The handles terminate in moulded ribbed ornament, creating a pleasing architectural detail that complements the strong silhouette. The hand-applied glaze varies subtly in tone from sea-green to turquoise, with fine craquelure, firing marks and minor imperfections typical of traditional Tamegroute production.
Produced in the ancient pottery-making centre of Tamegroute, on the edge of the Sahara in Morocco's Draa Valley, these vases embody the region's centuries-old ceramic tradition. Their vibrant colour and sculptural form make them particularly effective as lamps, bringing warmth and character to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
