La Guirlande de Julie - a floral masterpiece
I recently came across La Guirlande de Julie while doing some research, and I simply had to share it. It is, quite possibly, one of the most exquisite objects I’ve ever encountered. Commissioned in the 17th century, La Guirlande is a book of love poetry created by a French nobleman as a grand gesture to woo the woman he adored, Julie d’Angennes. Each poem is accompanied by delicate hand-painted flowers, comparing her beauty to nature’s most stunning blooms. The result is a masterpiece of art, literature, and devotion.
The French Literary Salons
The early 1600s saw the rise of the salon — a fashionable, intellectual space for sociability, debate, and cultural exchange. Hosted most often by women, salons offered an alternative to the royal court and brought together authors, musicians, nobles, artists, scientists, and politicians. One of the most renowned was that of Catherine de Vivonne, Marquise de Rambouillet, who held gatherings in her famous chambre bleue at the Hôtel de Rambouillet in Paris. These were not raucous parties but refined, playful, and strictly mannered circles where wit and learning reigned supreme.
It was here that Charles de Sainte-Maure, Marquis de Montausier, first met Julie, the Marquise’s daughter.
The Most Romantic Gesture of All Time?
In love with Julie and inspired by the literary culture of the salon, Charles commissioned some of the era’s greatest poets — all members of the same circle — to compose verses in her honour. Nicolas Robert, one of the finest botanical illustrators of the time, painted the flowers; Nicolas Jarry, the celebrated calligrapher, transcribed the poems in a flawless ornamental hand; and the renowned binder Le Gascon completed the volume. The finished work was nothing short of extraordinary.
In 1641, Charles arranged for the book to be placed on Julie’s bed as a declaration of his love. She kept him waiting four long years, but eventually she accepted his proposal — and they married.
A Living Legacy
La Guirlande de Julie is more than a love token; it is a rare window into the cultural life of the French salons, where art, literature, and intellect intertwined. Thanks to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the entire book has been digitised and can now be explored online — every poem, every flower, every flourish preserved for us to marvel at today.
