Samson Vase Mounted as a Table Lamp

A striking ceramic Samson vase transformed into an elegant table lamp, this piece is distinguished by ornate blue and red patterns featuring birds and floral motifs. Reflecting late 19th-century revivalist taste, the lamp captures the essence of collectible decorative porcelain from France’s ‘belle époque’.

Origin: France, Edmé Samson & Cie
Date: Circa 1890–1900
Material: Porcelain mounted on a wooden base

Dimensions: Height to rim of vase: 38 cm (15 in)

Condition: Excellent decorative condition; delicate original paints and glazes remain vivid with only minor signs of age.

This Samson table lamp is a notable example of the celebrated Parisian company Edmé Samson & Cie, established in the mid-19th century and renowned for its meticulous reproductions of European and Asian ceramics. While the firm drew inspiration from makers such as Meissen and Sèvres, Samson pieces are regarded for their high quality and individual decorative value rather than as mere replicas. Today, Samson’s works are prized by collectors and featured in distinguished museum collections, recognised for their place in the history of decorative arts and the Victorian passion for elegant interiors.

Notable Features:

  • Superb craftsmanship, with intricate hand-painted avian and floral decoration in vivid cobalt and iron red hues
  • Two distinct tiers, each boasting unique and precise detailing, reminiscent of Asian export porcelain and Rococo influences
  • Mounted on a sturdy wooden base and re-purposed as a refined table lamp, giving renewed practicality and style to the original vase
  • Collectable form; Samson porcelain is highly sought after for its historical relevance and graceful presence, providing an accessible alternative to rare originals

Ideal for collectors of antique porcelain, decorative ceramics, or those seeking a sophisticated table lamp to enhance traditional or eclectic interior schemes, this Samson vase lamp is both a conversation piece and a practical addition to your home. Its balanced proportions, intricate painting, and distinguished provenance make it a versatile choice for display, furnishing, or forming the centrepiece of a curated collection.
