Stalker and Parker are two of the most renowned japanning experts of the 17th century. Their work is characterised by its intricate and detailed designs, which often feature birds, flowers, and other natural elements, chinoiseries of oriental inspiration. In 1688 they published the Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing with illustrations and technical descriptions.
The process of japanning involves the application of several layers of varnish and body to a painted pigment surface. The lacquer is then treated to create a hard and glossy finish. Stalker and Parker use a variety of techniques to create their unique designs. These include the use of stencils and hand painting and gilding.
Stalker and Parker’s japanning work is highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts alike. Though there are few documented examples the techniques they discovered and the designs they published were highly influential on the contemporary and 18th-century finishers. Examples of English lacquerwork are often seen in galleries and museums. These rare survivals are a testament to the skill and dedication of the japanning and lacquer workers and are a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the art form.
