Metope is an architectural element that is found in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. It is typically a rectangular panel that is framed with a decorative border and is usually found on the exterior of cabinets, bookcases and classical inspired furniture. Metopes often feature relief sculptures, which depict a variety of scenes, including mythological figures, battles, and animals. They were often used to decorate the exterior of buildings and decorative arts and to tell stories about the building’s purpose or the history of the area or a theme.
